Anglophone PDP Outline

Overall Objectives of the ACEP-PRECA Professional Development Program

Participants will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to:

  1. Express an understanding of, and successfully complete the roles and responsibilities of specialist as outlined in the institutional project of their respective ODEL team.
  2. Develop a plan for ODEL within their specialist stream (Governance, Technology Development, and Instructional Design).
  3. Develop strategies to appropriately respond to the external and internal constraints of the institutional context and the needs of the ODEL client/user.
  4. Make real and ongoing contributions to a community of practice in ODEL.

Module 1 Introduction

Specific Objectives - Participants will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to:

  • Successfully navigate within the WebCT course.
  • Discuss the expectations for the participants and facilitators for the online PDP modules.

Module 2 Project Planning

Specific Objectives - Participants will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to: 

  • Categorize the various responsibilities of the Instructional Designer
  • Differentiate crucial steps / phases of the Project lifecycle
  • Describe key issues of staffing project teams
  • Value the elements and principles of project development including project evaluation; budgeting; creation of a work plan; monitoring the ongoing development, and project closure.

Module 3 Needs Assessment

Specific Objectives - Participants will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to: 

  • Analyze and evaluate how needs analysis occurs in your institute.
  • Identify the information that will be helpful for design and development.
  • Recognize potential difficulties and consequences that can occur.

Module 4 Technology Planning

Specific Objectives - Participants will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to: 

  • Explain the major components of an effective technology plan.
  • Describe a situational analysis of the existing technology infrastructure and skills.
  • Determine the technology skills required and a plan for the development of these skills.
  • Determine the technology requirement for the learning activities in your institutional project.
  • Develop a process for developing a technology plan.
  • Determine financial and sustainability considerations for your plan.
  • Apply criterion for technology evaluation.

Module 5 Legal Issues

Specific Objectives - Participants will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to: 

  • Discuss copyright regulations as they relate to your institutional project.
  • Explain the key points of software license agreements as they relate to your institutional project.
  • Describe the basics of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) and a contract.
  • Differentiate between a memorandum of understanding (MOU) and a contract.
  • Describe the key components of legal agreements including:
    • Course lease agreements
    • Site agreements
    • Instructor/facilitator agreements
    • Invigilator agreements
    • Course development agreements
  • Describe the roles and responsibilities for team members with respect to legal issues and concerns.

Module 6 Design and Development

Specific Objectives - Participants will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to:

  • Define your role within the project
  • Appraise the environment for design and development
  • Differentiate the components of an online course
  • Identify and explain the organization of a course in relation to the learning cycle
  • Develop learning objectives
  • Construct a performance assessment
  • Devise instructional strategies for course content
  • Determine suitable media options for your project

Module 7 Financial Management and Sustainability

Specific Objectives - Participants will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to: 

  • Identify, for ODeL Programs, components of the following types of costs:
    • capital costs
    • operating costs
  • Identify the costs related to technology
  • Identify the costs related to course and/or program delivery and services
  • Describe strategies for technology sustainability
  • Describe strategies for sustainable student support
  • Identify the costs related to materials development
  • Describe strategies during the development process that promote course sustainability
  • Identify costs of management and governance of ODeL programs
  • Describe strategies for sustainability of ODeL courses.

Module 8 Faculty and Student Support

Specific Objectives - Participants will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to: 

  • Outline components of faculty support required for quality ODeL.
  • Outline components of student support required for quality ODeL
  • Outline service processes
  • Describe strategies for technology support for both faculty and students?
  • Describe how the course development process can assist with student and faculty support.
  • Identify how on campus services will be delivered to students.
  • Create a detailed plan for support services for your institutional ODeL project

Module 9 Application Software and Computing Infrastructure

Specific Objectives - Participants will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to: 

  • Describe the process you use to select software and infrastructure
  • Describe criteria used to select software and infrastructure
  • Describe strategies for maintaining computing infrastructure
  • Outline what you need software to do for course development, course delivery, and ODeL management.

Module 10 Quality Assurance

Specific Objectives - Participants will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to: 

  • Create Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for your institutional project.
  • Explain your strategies for monitoring ODeL activities.
  • Describe your evaluation and reporting plan for your ODeL program.
  • Describe criteria for assessing the quality of an ODeL course.
  • Describe criteria for assessing the efficiency and effectiveness of faculty and student support.

Module 11 Marketing and Partnerships

Specific Objectives - Participants will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to: 

  • Explain components of a marketing plan.
  • Describe marketing strategies for your ODeL course.
  • Outline criteria used when selecting groups, institutions or agencies to partner with.
  • Describe strategies used to ensure that partnerships are mutually beneficial.
  • Outline the benefits and challenges of partnerships for course development.
  • Outline the benefits and challenges of partnerships for faculty and student support services.

Module 12 Administrative Process and Systems Integration

Specific Objectives - Participants will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to: 

  • Outline how technology can support your administrative processes for your ODeL project.
  • Outline criteria to consider when planning systems integration.
  • Outline the impact systems integration will have on your specialty stream within your ODeL project.

Module 13 Implementation and Evaluation

Specific Objectives - Participants will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to: 

  • Create an implementation readiness checklist for your ODeL project.
  • Outline your implementation process, including components of materials development, technology and delivery, as well as governance.
  • Create an evaluation plan for your ODeL course.
  • Describe how the results of your evaluation will be used.
