starafrica.comSylvain Béletre from research and consulting house Balancing Act (balancingact-africa.com), specializing in information and communication technologies (ICTs) in Africa, looks at the recent success of technology to serve human development in Africa.
Important regional initiatives for teachers’ training have been undertaken such as the Teacher Training Initiative for sub-Saharan (TTISSA) coordinated by UNESCO. It was designed to improve Education quality in 46 SSA countries. The Teacher Education Project of the African Virtual University (AVU), in partnership with AfDB and NEPAD, the Virtual University for Small States of the Commonwealth (the VUSSC - Virtual University for Small States of The Commonwealth), One Laptop per Child – OLPC - the NEPAD e-Schools for the computerization and networking of schools initiative, Schoolnet Africa and World Links are all working to develop the ICT skills of teachers. FOSSFA (Free and Open Source Software Foundation for Africa), Bokjang Bokjef in Senegal and LinuxChix Africa also contribute to the use of software.
