• Blended mode: mixed online and face-to-face
• Face-to-face
1. Rationale
Introductory Chemistry 1 underpinned the concepts of matter, measurements, structure and periodicity of the atom, Molecules and compounds, and their chemical reactions. This study builds on the aforementioned concepts by being the foundation stone for better understanding of chemicals and the various ways of classifying the elements in Chemistry. With the ever expanding chemistry knowledge, here we show how best to predict and understand the simple applications of both chemical principles and chemical compounds and the use of the elements of the periodic table.
2. Prerequisite or Knowledge
- Introduction to Chemistry 1: Matter and measurements, Structure and periodicity of the atom, molecules and compounds, and chemical reactions.
- Computer literacy (Microsoft word processor and excel).
3. General objective(s)
By the end of this module you are expected to be able to:
- State the placements of elements in the periodic table
- Classify elements into s, p, d and f blocks of the periodic table
- Describe and explain the periodicity in the physical properties of the s- and P-block elements
- Describe and explain the general features in the chemical properties of the s- and p-block elements
- Describe, explain and predict the physical and chemical properties of the Compounds of s- and p-block elements
- Describe and even predict the methods used for extraction of the s- and p block elements
- State and predict the economic uses of the s- and p-block elements
4. Time
The total hours required to complete the module is 120 hours
5. Material
- In general, the learner needs to have:
- Course recommended text books
- Computer with internet connection
- CD-ROMs
- Access to e-Library
- Scientific calculator
