The African Virtual University Rector, Dr. Bakary Diallo, will attend the 2012 World Open Educational Resources Congress. The conference is organized by UNESCO in partnership with the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) and through the generous support of the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. The aims of the Congress are to: Release the 2012 Paris OER Declaration; Showcase the world's best practices in Open Educational Resources policies, initiatives, and experts; and celebrate the 10th anniversary of the 2002 UNESCO Forum that coined the term Open Educational Resources (OER).

AVU will introduce to conference participants OER@AVU, an online platform where scholars and educators can contribute education resources used for teaching, learning, research without copy right restrictions. The AVU OER platform (
http://oer.avu.org) hosts 73 open educational modules divided into a variety of topics: 46 courses in math and science, 19 in teacher education, four in basic ICT (information and communication technology) skills and four in ICT classroom integration. These resources are also available on Scribd (http://www.scribd.com/AfricanVirtualUni).

The course material was developed and released as Open Education Resources through the AVU Multinational Teacher Education Program and is available in three different languages – English, French, and Portuguese, making AVU the leading African institution in providing and using OER. The portal also hosts 105 tutorial videos on various subjects, 15 of which are in French. AVU is currently improving its existing collection, developing new resources computer science, and making the OER portal more interactive and appealing to users.
