1. Rationale
Educationists all over the world have been struggling to develop methods that can optimize the attainment of teaching/learning objectives. Every teacher is faced with the responsibility for selecting and designing suitable learning experiences to provide optimal learning opportunities for the students. This module develops a student’s understanding of teaching issues such as the secondary school curriculum, the learner-centered paradigm, lesson planning, teaching strategies,
creating conducive learning environments, ways of measuring and evaluating teaching /learning effectiveness.

- Philosophy of Education
- General Psychology
- Learning Psychology
- Subject matter of the student’s elective teaching subjects i.e. Biology, Chemistry History, Mathematics, etc.
- Classroom management
3. General objectives
At the end of this Unit you should be able to:
- Formulate instructional objectives
- Explain the meaning of teaching and learning
- Describe various techniques and strategies for teaching
- Describe the roles of the teachers and the learners in instruction
- Prepare schemes of work and lesson plans
- Teach in during a microteaching session.
- Explain different methods of sustaining effective classroom organization
- Demonstrate the use of various techniques for assessing and evaluating
- learning

The module will take 120 hours distributed as follows:
Unit 1: 25 hours
Unit 2: 25 hours
Unit 3: 40 hours
Unit 4: 30 hours

- Recommended text books including web based materials.
- Video recording of students teaching if available
- Face to Face for micro-teaching with trainers
- Virtual set ups for micro-teaching demonstrations or practical lessons for students who have chosen subjects that require practical.
